Copa Airlines Colombia (previously AeroRepública ) is a Colombian airline based in Bogotá and based at Bogotá Airport . It is a subsidiary of the Panamanian Copa Airlines and the country's second largest airline after Avianca .

history

Copa Airlines Colombia was founded on November 23, 1992 by Amos Ginder and Dr. Alfonso Avila founded as AeroRepública. Operations began on June 19, 1993 with three Boeing 727-100s . The first destinations from Bogotá were Cartagena , Santa Marta and the island of San Andrés . Until this year, there was no new airline in Colombia for 25 years.

In 1997 it was announced that flights to the USA were planned, but these flights have not yet been realized. At that time 33% of the airline belonged to the companies Aeropostal and Promotora de Inversiones Superior.

On June 1, 2005, the Panamanian Copa Airlines announced that it had acquired a 90 percent stake in the airline. Up to that date, only codeshare agreements existed between these two airlines. At the same time it was announced that the airline would be the second largest in Colombia, just behind Avianca .

AeroRepública presented their new corporate identity on September 8, 2006 after market studies . The new logo is strongly reminiscent of the logo of Copa Airlines or Continental Airlines as co-owner of Copa Airlines. The name AeroRepública was initially retained and merged with the Copa Airlines logo. This is intended to ensure that the airline can maintain its domestic reputation and at the same time build on the international reputation of Copa Airlines (or Continental Airlines). With the new identity, plans for the future were also drawn up. These included flights to the Copa Airlines hub in Panamá, renewal of the fleet by Embraer 190 , connection to Continental Airlines' OnePass frequent flyer program and an e-ticket system .

AeroRepública placed an order for eight Embraer 190s for 2007. Five of these were bought new from the manufacturer and three were leased from GECAS . Furthermore, the airline had options and purchase rights to a further 20 Embraer 190s by 2011, several of which were also redeemed.

In order to minimize expenses, the board of directors announced that staff would have to be cut. Due to the change from Continental Airlines to the Star Alliance , Copa Airlines and thus also Aero República announced on May 26, 2009 that they would end their cooperation with SkyTeam as of October 2009. Since October 6, 2010 the company has been flying under the brand name Copa Airlines Colombia . On 10 November 2010 it was announced that Copa Airlines Colombia as Copa Airlines and the airline alliance will join Star Alliance.

Destinations

There are national destinations in Colombia and international destinations in Central and South America . Several destinations in Latin American countries are flown to as a charter .

Copa Airlines Colombia also has codeshare agreements with Copa Airlines and United Airlines .
