SATENA ( acronym for Servicio Aéreo a Territorios Nacionales ) is a national Colombian regional airline with headquarters in Bogotá and bases at Bogotá El Dorado Airport and Olaya Herrera City Airport in Medellín .
history
Satena was brought into being by law in 1962 with the aim of promoting the far apart and underdeveloped places and regions and connecting them to the economic centers of Colombia. The Colombian Air Force was commissioned with the implementation; In this way, the Air Force's existing transport capacities could be better utilized and partially financed.
First, with military aircraft of the types Douglas DC-3 / C-47 and Douglas DC-4 / C-54, connections were made from Bogotá to Leticia , via Tarapacá on to El Encanto to Puerto Legufzamo . This was followed by routes to Cali , Neiva and Villavicencio . The military aircraft used were not converted for civilian transport, the seats consisted of canvas benches arranged lengthways.
In 1965 the fleet consisted of two de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver , five Douglas DC-3 , two DC-4 and two Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina . Some machines were gifts from the USA . In 1968 Satena became a public company and in 1971 a state company. The route network was expanded to 63 destinations.
Serious accidents occurred time and again due to the poor equipment at the airfields and infrastructure. The pilots navigated with cross bearings and near the runway according to sight.
In 1995 the company received a new management. Punctuality, service and flight safety have been greatly improved. The fleet has meanwhile been completely renewed, civilian pilots were hired and the machines were given civilian license plates. At the turn of the millennium, the route network comprised 112 destinations.
Destinations
Satena only uses the airfield close to the city for its flights from Medellín, which is limited to 50-seater and mainly serves numerous destinations within Colombia from Bogotá, Medellín and Cali, including Buenaventura , Arauca , La Macarena , Nuquí , Quibdó and Villavicencio .
