Lists of aviation accidents

On March 28, 1985, a Fokker F28-3000C of the Colombian airline SATENA had an accident with a Fokker F28 operated by SATENA on a domestic scheduled flight approaching Florencia airport . All 46 people on board were killed in the accident.

plane

The machine was a Fokker F28 Fellowship 3000C with the serial number 11165 , which had been finally assembled at the Fokker plant in Schiphol and which had completed its maiden flight on January 29, 1981 with the test number PH-EXV . Little is known about the subsequent operating history. On November 29, 1983, the machine was re-registered by the manufacturer to the aircraft registration number PH-EXS , and on May 15, 1984 the machine was re-registered to the manufacturer, this time with the registration number PH-ZCG . The machine finally went into operation for the airline SATENA, which was founded for the Colombian Air Force, with the military aircraft registration FAC-1140 and the name Mandarua . The twin- engine, short - haul, narrow-body aircraft was equipped with two Rolls-Royce Spey 555 engines. By the time of the accident, the machine had completed a total of 1,327 operating hours, which accounted for 2,288 take-offs and landings.

Passengers, crew and flight plan

The flight plan of the intra-Colombian scheduled flight, which was operated in the early morning hours, provided for a take-off from Bogotá airport , with Neiva airport being the first stopover . On the second leg of the flight, the machine should continue to fly to San Vicente de Caguán Airport . The last flight segment should lead to Florencia Airport. The accident occurred on this section.

40 passengers had started the last leg of the flight, and there was also a six-person crew on board.

the accident

When the aircraft was on the last leg of the flight, the pilots were informed by the air traffic control in Florencia that the weather conditions at the airport were below the minimum weather due to rain and thick fog and that the airport would therefore be closed. Regardless of this, the pilots decided to attempt an approach and initiated a descent. The last radio contact took place at 09:40 a.m., at which time the aircraft was at an altitude of 3,600 feet (approx. 1,100 meters). On its final approach, at 9:50 a.m. and about 15 kilometers north of the airport, the aircraft collided with a cloud-shrouded mountain. The Fokker was completely destroyed in the impact and all 46 occupants were killed.

root cause

The type of accident was a controlled flight into terrain , caused by an attempt by the cockpit crew to carry out an approach below the weather minimum.
