Arauca (completely Villa de Santa Bárbara de Arauca ) is a municipality ( municipio ) and the capital of the department of the same name in Colombia .
geography
Arauca is located on the Arauca River right on the border with Venezuela in the Colombian Llanos . The international bridge José Antonio Páez connects Venezuela ( El Amparo de Apure ) and Colombia at this point. The area of the parish is flat and is often flooded. The municipality is bordered by the state of Apure in Venezuela to the north and east , by Arauquita to the west and by Puerto Rendón and Cravo Norte to the south .

The municipality of Arauca has 93,261 inhabitants, of whom 81,245 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).
history
The Arauca region was explored by the German explorer Georg Hohermuth von Speyer (Spanish: Jorge de la Espira ) in 1536. He was looking for Eldorado and therefore did not stay. Jesuits later followed and founded the first settlements.
The city of Arauca was founded on December 4, 1780 by Juan Isidro Daboín on the area of an indigenous settlement (called Guahibo ) of 10 families. The city was named after the Arauca River .
economy
Arauca's main industry is oil production . Approximately 80,000 barrels of oil are produced annually. In addition, as in all of the Llanos, cattle production plays an important role. In addition, sugar cane , cassava , bananas , cocoa and fruit are grown.
Infrastructure
Arauca is served by the Aeropuerto Santiago Pérez Quiróz ( IATA code : AUC ). There are flight connections to Bogotá , Bucaramanga , Cúcuta , Barranquilla and Yopal .

Arauca has been the seat of the Arauca diocese since 1915 .
