Cravo Norte , also known as San José de Cravo Norte known is a municipality ( municipio ) of the departments of Arauca in Colombia .

Cravo Norte is located in the southeast of Arauca in the Colombian Llanos on the Río Cravo Norte at an altitude of 124 m above sea level. NN , 142 km from the city of Arauca . The municipality borders in the north on the municipality of Arauca , in the west on Puerto Rondón , in the east on the municipality Rómulo Gallegos in the state of Apure in Venezuela and in the south on Hato Corozal in the department of Casanare and La Primavera in the department of Vichada , with the Río Casanare and the Río Meta form the border.

The municipality of Cravo Norte has 3190 inhabitants, of whom 2286 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).
history
During the time of the Spanish conquest, the German conquistador Nikolaus Federmann and Jesuit missionaries had their first contact with indigenous people in what is now Cravo Norte. The first census of the area then known as La Soledad de Cravo Norte showed a population of 205 inhabitants who belonged to the indigenous peoples of the Guahibos and Chiricoas . The present settlement was founded in 1874 by the Venezuelan Socorro Figueroa with the aim of raising cattle. After a temporary boom in the early 20th century, Cravo Norte was hit by the Violencia in 1925 , civil war-like conditions that destroyed the place. Cravo Norte recovered only slowly from this. Cravo Norte was declared a municipality in 1987.

The main industry of Cravo Norte is cattle production . The cattle graze on the vast plains of the community. Agriculture takes place almost exclusively in the form of subsistence farming .
Transport links
Cravo Norte has a small regional airport and can be reached from Arauca by plane. There are road connections to Arauca (passable all year round) and to Puerto Rondón (only passable in the dry season). From the main town only unpaved roads lead to the rural settlements within the municipality. There are boat connections to Puerto López and Puerto Rondón via the Meta and Casanare rivers .
