The Meta River having an average runoff of approximately 4300 m³ / s third largest tributary of the South American stream Orinoco and flows through the eastern Llanos of Colombia . It is 1200 kilometers long and approx. 900 kilometers from Puerto López open to shipping . This river is an important trade route between Colombia and Venezuela .

The Río Meta arises from the Río Humea , Río Guayuriba and Río Guatiquía , which have their origin on the high altitudes of the Sumapaz National Park , on the eastern cordillera of the Andes . The Río Cravo Sur , the Río Casanare , the Río Cusiana , the Río Upía and the Río Manacacías flow into the Río Meta .
