Arauquita is a municipality ( municipality ) of the departments Arauca in Colombia , directly at the border to Venezuela on Arauca River .

geography

Arauquita is located in the northwest of Araucas, in the Colombian Llanos , at an altitude of 165 m above sea level. NN , 74 km from the city of Arauca . The municipality borders in the east on the municipality of Arauca , in the west on Saravena , in the north separated from the Río Arauca on La Victoria in the district of Páez in the state of Apure in Venezuela , in the south on Puerto Rendón and in the southwest on Fortul and Tame .

The municipality of Arauquita has 42,977 inhabitants, of which 20,228 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Upon arrival of the Spaniards who lived indigenous peoples of Macaguanes and Tames in the area of today's community. Arauquita itself was founded in 1675 as San Lorenzo by Jesuit missionaries. Later the place was named El Guadual by settlers . The place has had its current name since 1920. Arauquita initially received the status of a community in 1943, but was then again corregimiento of Tame . Arauquita has been an independent municipality since 1971.

economy

The main industries of Arauquita are cattle production and agriculture , of which about 85% of the population live. In particular, bananas , cocoa and sugar cane are grown . In addition, oil production plays an important role and nowadays provides the community with the greatest income.
