Saravena is a municipality ( municipio ) of the departments of Arauca in Colombia .

geography

Saravena is located in the northwest of Araucas , at the transition from the Andes to the Llanos , at an altitude of between 190 m above sea level. NN and 2260 m above sea level NN , 196 km from the city of Arauca . The municipality borders in the north on the district of Páez in the state of Apure in Venezuela , in the south on Fortul , in the east on Arauquita and Fortul and in the west on Cubará in the Departamento de Boyacá .

The municipality of Saravena has 48,647 inhabitants, of which 33,361 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Saravena was founded in 1972 by a group of settlers and has subsequently been the target of migratory movements from many parts of Colombia. Initially, Saravena was part of Tame , but received parish status in 1976.

economy

The main industries in Saravena are cattle , poultry and pig production and agriculture . Trade is also very pronounced . In addition, small businesses are specifically promoted. Saravena has its own regional airport.
