Fortul is a municipality ( municipio ) of the departments of Arauca in Colombia .

geography

Fortul is located in the west of Arauca in the Colombian Llanos at the foot of the Andes ( Sierra Nevada del Cocuy ) 132 km from the city of Arauca . The municipality of Fortul is located at an altitude of 200 to 3500 m above sea level. NN , the main town being at an altitude of 246 meters. The municipality borders on Saravena to the north, Tame to the south, Arauquita to the east and Güicán in the Boyacá department to the west .

The municipality of Fortul has 26,798 inhabitants, of which 14,410 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

The place of today's Fortul has been a landmark and a resting point for the herds of cattle driven from the south to Venezuela since colonial times. Individual families have lived in what is now Fortul since 1920. Initially the place was known as Salibón . In 1945 an airport was built that was to serve the military as a base for fighting rebels until 1957. Increased migration from other parts of Colombia began in the 1960s. The place itself was built from 1969. Since 1970 Fortul was the seat of a police station. Fortul has had parish status since 1990.

economy

Fortul's main industry is cattle and milk production . There is also agriculture .

Transport links

Fortul has a small regional airport. There are road connections to Saravena (and from there towards Bucaramanga , Cúcuta or Arauca), to Tame (and from there towards Tunja and Bogotá ) and to Arauca and Arauquita via the village of La Esmeralda.
