Corregimientos in Colombia

The term Corregimiento in Colombia stands for an administrative unit that is used in rural areas for parts of communities that in turn have a population core.

In accordance with the Colombian Constitution of 1991 and Article 117 of Law 136 of 1994, a corregimiento is an internal part of a municipality that can be determined by the municipal council of the whole municipality to improve the provision of services and the participation of the population in public matters to guarantee. A corregimiento can in turn be divided into veredas and can contain police sectors ( Inspecciones de Policía ), hamlets ( caseríos ) and homesteads ( sitios ).

Historically, a corregimiento was the jurisdiction of a corregidor in the Spanish colonies .
