Florencia is the capital and a municipality ( municipio ) in the Colombian department of Caquetá . Florencia is the second largest Colombian city east of the Andes , after Villavicencio , the capital of the Meta department .
geography
The urban area is located on the eastern edge of the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes at an altitude of 242 meters and borders the Amazon basin . Florencia is therefore often called the “gateway to the Amazon” in Colombia.
The Río Hacha , which is responsible for the frequent, heavy flooding, runs through the urban area . The sewer network is in urgent need of rehabilitation, and the poverty rate is significantly higher than the Colombian average.
The municipal area has a total area of 2292 km², of which 2277 km² are in the rural and 14.56 km² in the urban part of the municipality. Florencia has an average annual temperature of 27 ° C. The municipality borders in the northwest on Suaza , Guadalupe and Garzón in the Departamento del Huila , in the east on La Montañita , in the south on Milán and Morelia and in the southwest on Belén de los Andaquíes .
population
The municipality of Florencia has 184,510 inhabitants, of which 163,082 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).
history
Florencia, founded in 1902 and the oldest town in the Caquetá department, has little historical building stock. The regional cultural center is now housed in the former rubber stock exchange , the Curiplaya House.
economy
Industrialization is in its infancy. The company Nestlé operates in Florencia a pasteurization of milk; almost the only modern establishment in town. Numerous state-owned companies provide the largest number of qualified jobs, and private investments are almost completely lacking.
traffic
Florencia has a regional airport and is connected to the road network of Colombia by an asphalt road over the ridge of the Eastern Cordillera to Neiva , the capital of the Huila department .
