history

The place name Wörmlitz is of Slavic origin, derived from the earlier name Uirbinici or Virbinici. In 992, the later Emperor Otto III. at Botfeld Castle in the Harz Mountains, with which he transferred, among other things, Wörmlitz to the Memleben monastery . It is the first written mention of the place. From the 12th century on, ownership changed frequently. After Wörmlitz was sold to the Brandenburg bishopric in 1306 , it later belonged to the von Alvensleben noble family, which is known in this region. Records from 1555 report that in 1555 a Christoph von Byern “made it a right noble seat for the first time”. For a long time, those of Stammer were estate lords, before Wörmlitz was acquired in the 18th century as Kronfideikommissgut for the Prussian Prince Heinrich .

The population lived mainly from agriculture and the peasants had to do manual and clamping services to the manor every fortnight. Around the middle of the 17th century, around 100 people lived in Wörmlitz, and in 1657 they saw how a large fire largely destroyed their village. The church, which dates back to the 12th century, was also largely a victim of the flames, which also destroyed the church records. In 1682 106 of the 110 inhabitants died of the plague .

Under the Prussian King Friedrich II , an administrative reorganization took place in 1785, as a result of which Wörmlitz was assigned to District I of the Jerichow District. After Napoleon's victory over Prussia, Wörmlitz belonged to the Kingdom of Westphalia from 1807 to 1813 under Napoleon's brother Jérôme . When the political situation was reorganized after the Congress of Vienna , Wörmlitz was incorporated into the newly created district of Jerichow I with the district town of Burg as a result of the Prussian district reform in 1818 .

From the middle of the 19th century, Wörmlitz also took part in the generally growing development. Within fifty years the population had increased from 300 to around 400 in 1890. In addition to the farmers, many craftsmen such as blacksmiths, builders, rope makers, weavers and tailors as well as bakers now pursued their trade. In 1863 a new schoolhouse was built next to the church. However, due to the resistance of the farmers who did not want to give up their land, the connection of Wörmlitz to the modern transport routes failed. Both the new Chaussee from Magdeburg to Möckern and the Biederitz - Loburg railway line, inaugurated in 1892, had to be passed kilometers south of the town. Wörmlitz received electricity in 1910.

On September 30, 1928, the Wörmlitz manor district was merged with the rural community of Wörmlitz.

After the Second World War , the land reform ordered by the Soviet occupying power in 1945 expropriated the manor and the property was divided between 27 new farmers . With the district reorganization carried out by the GDR in 1952, Wörmlitz became part of the Burg district in the Magdeburg district. In the same year an LPG was founded in the course of forced collectivization , which determined the economic life of the place in the following years.

When there was another administrative reorganization after German reunification, Wörmlitz was incorporated into the Jerichower Land district in 1994. From the LPG "Heinrich Heine" became the Agrargenossenschaft eG. Wörmlitz, which, along with a few small craft businesses, has remained the largest employer. The local ten-class school was downgraded to a primary school in 1993. On January 1, 2002, it was incorporated into the city of Möckern.

Evangelical Church of St. Simon

Evangelical Church in Wörmlitz

The origin of the Evangelical Church of St. Simon is a late Romanesque hall from the 12th to 13th centuries. In the 15th century there was an extension with a choir room closed on three sides. After the church was partially destroyed by fire, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style around 1718 . A coat of arms above the west portal commemorates the former von Stammer estate. Two relief tombstones from the Renaissance period have been preserved in the entrance area . They are dated to the years 1582 and 1584.
