Friedensau is a town and part of Möckern in the Jerichower Land district in Saxony-Anhalt .

geography

Friedensau is located in the district of Jerichower Land in the Burg-Ziesarer Vorfläming area , surrounded by forest areas on the Ihle river , around 30 kilometers east of the state capital Magdeburg .

traffic

Friedensau is connected to the core town of Möckern (8 km) and the district town of Burg (10.5 km) via connecting roads. A few kilometers north of Friedensau runs the federal motorway 2 , with which Friedensau can be reached either via the connection point Burg-Ost or Theeßen .

In Möckern there is a stop (former train station) on the Biederitz – Altengrabow railway line , which continues to Magdeburg .

history

On the site of today's Friedensau there was originally a small settlement called mollendinum in Wusten with a mill property . 1306 both passed into the possession of the Bishop of Brandenburg. Later there was only one mill, called "Klappermühle", at this point.

In 1899, the members of the German Association of Seventh-day Adventists made the decision to found a mission school and a sanatorium. They bought the secluded Klappermühle with the then approximately 34 hectare property on September 14, 1899 for around 50,000 gold marks and began teaching immediately after the opening ceremony on November 18. In the same year an application was made to change the name to “Friedensau”. The educational institution was officially recognized in 1990 as the Friedensau University of Theology .

Friedensau became an independent political municipality in 1920. With a regional reform that came into force on January 1, 2002, Friedensau lost its independence and became part of the town of Möckern .

politics

Local mayor is Rüdiger Schröter.

The residents of Friedensau are represented by a local council. After the municipal elections in Saxony-Anhalt in 2009 , the local council was composed:

  • CDU: 3 seats (37.5%)
  • Free voter community Friedensau 04: 4 seats (62.5%)

Other lists / individual applicants did not stand for election. The turnout of the 305 eligible voters was 65.8%.

coat of arms

Blazon : "In silver on a four-arched red halo the silver Christusmonogramm ΧΡ accompanied by Alpha and Omega."

Friedensau did not have an officially approved coat of arms in the sense of a communal emblem until 1996; but there is a logo of the theological college, which was included in the coat of arms in a simplified form. The logo comes from the chapel in the Otto-Lüpke-Haus, the main building of the theological college, which is a landmark of Friedensau. Made of colored glass, it shows the Christ monogram in a halo between the Greek letters Alpha and Omega.

Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters in the Greek alphabet. They stand as self-designations for both God the Father and Christ in the sense of "the first and the last". In early Christian art and epigraphy, alpha and omega were mainly used as symbols of Christ - mostly in connection with the Christ monogram. This is also a letter symbol, consisting of the Greek letters Chi and Rho for Jesus Christ. From the end of the 4th century the symbol of Christ was represented in connection with alpha and omega.

The decorations on the rosette in the logo of the theological college were omitted from the coat of arms. The halo was set in red in accordance with the basic Tingist rules and based on its actual coloring in the chapel in the Otto-Lüpke-Haus. Heraldist Jörg Mantzsch realized the design of the coat of arms and its inclusion in the approval process .

flag

The flag is red and white (1: 1) striped with the coat of arms.

Friedensau is the location of the Friedensau Theological University , whose sponsor is the Seventh-day Adventist Church . Friedensau was founded and built up by the Free Church specifically for theological and social diaconal training. To this day, Friedensau is closely connected with the Seventh-day Adventists; the place is shaped by the university and its facilities. The extensive campus runs through large parts of the place; 30 of the 48 buildings in town belong to the university. The cultural and intellectual life is largely determined by the university.

The facilities that do not belong to the university include the senior citizens' home run by the Advent charity with 122 places, a scout campground (see below), an open-air agricultural technology museum, a historical cemetery and a park of biblical plants. The local supply is ensured by the shop café to the old fire brigade with an integrated postal agency.

The Friedensau Children's and Youth Center maintains a scout tent and the largest high ropes course in Saxony-Anhalt. In addition to the campsite, there is also an eco house, a group of log houses and an event space with space for approx. 1400 people, which is covered by a circus tent in the summer months.

Over the Easter weekend (Maundy Thursday to Easter Monday), the Easter camp Friedensau (short: OLaF) of the Advent youth takes place annually on the campsite. Year after year, numerous scout groups from all over Germany come to Friedensau for this event.
