San Vicente del Caguán is a municipality ( municipio ) in the Colombian department of Caquetá . San Vicente del Caguán is the second most important city in the department and the entire Colombian Amazon, both in terms of population and economic activity.

The rivers Río Caguán and Río Yarí flow through the municipality of San Vicente del Caguán . San Vicente del Caguán is 151 km from Florencia . The municipality borders in the north on the Departamento del Meta ( La Uribe and La Macarena ), in the east on the Departamento de Guaviare ( Calamar ) and Solano , in the south on Solano and Cartagena del Chairá and in the west on Puerto Rico and the Departamento del Huila ( Algeciras , Rivera , Neiva , Tello and Baraya ).

The municipality of San Vicente del Caguán has 72,949 inhabitants, of which 46,853 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).
history
San Vicente del Caguán was founded on September 27, 1898 on the Río Caguán and placed under the patronage of St. Vincent de Paul by the Capuchins who were involved in its founding , as his saint's feast is celebrated on September 27. A separate administrative unit (Corregimiento) became the place in 1905. From the establishment of Caquetá as a commissariat (Comisaría) 1905 to 1932, San Vicente del Caguán was the capital of Caquetá. Since 1950 San Vicente del Caguán has the status of a municipality.
From 1998 to 2001 the city was the administrative center of the so-called Zona de despeje , the demilitarized zone , and was de facto administered autonomously by the guerrilla organization FARC .
After the reconquest of this zone at the end of 2001, ordered by the government of Colombia's President Andrés Pastrana , the region around San Vicente del Caguán was a trouble spot. Numerous attacks by the FARC and by paramilitaries shaped everyday life. Several thousand residents fled each year, mainly to the capital of the department, Florencia . The paved road connection from Florencia to San Vicente del Caguán was also the target of numerous attacks, although the Colombian armed forces were present with strong security forces.
The peace process between the FARC and the government of Juan Manuel Santos from 2012 to 2016 was followed by the population with a mixture of hope for a future in peace and fear of a repetition of the mistakes of the peace negotiations between the FARC and the government of Andrés Pastrana .
