Puerto Rico is a municipality ( municipio ) in the Colombian department of Caquetá .
geography
Puerto Rico is located north of Caquetá on the Guayas River . The municipality borders in the northwest on Algeciras in the Departamento del Huila , in the east on San Vicente del Caguán , in the south on Cartagena del Chairá and in the west on El Doncello .
population
The municipality of Puerto Rico has 33,701 inhabitants, of which 14,625 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).
history
Puerto Rico was founded in 1882 by 20 families who settled on the banks of the Río Guayas. The settlers primarily dealt with the mining of cinchona bark and rubber . A Guayaquil settler named the river after the Ecuadorian Río Guayas . In the War of the Thousand Days , many displaced people settled in Puerto Rico. Since 1912 Puerto Rico had an Inspección de Policía (Police Inspection) and in 1915 the place received the status of a Corregimiento . Subsequently, the place lost its importance due to falling rubber and cinchona bark prices and only recovered from 1925. Since 1967 Puerto Rico has had the status of a community.
economy
The main industries of Puerto Rico are cattle , pig, and horse breeding and agriculture . In particular, bananas , cassava , rice , corn , coffee and sugar cane are grown. In addition, pond management is operated.
