action

One day before the first Advent , son Stefan reminds his mother whistling Christmas carols of the beginning of the pre-Christmas season. Hilde immediately starts the preparations and goes in search of the family's artificial Advent wreath, which husband Heinz finally brings in from the garage, looking for glue, broken in two. Between the second and third Advent, Hilde bakes cookies for the first time. When she took the baked shortcrust pastry out of the oven, it was badly burned. Hilde immediately suspects Heinz, who confirms that the oven was set far too low and that he then turned it up. Indignantly, Hilde then throws the inedible cookies into the trash can. Two days before Christmas Eve , Hilde and Heinz make initial preparations for the holidays. While Hilde ponders the quickly passed Advent season, Heinz discovers the Christmas presents hidden by his wife in the living room cupboard.

On the morning of December 24th, the couple decided to put up the Christmas tree in the house. Hilde is surprised that parts of the Christmas tree decorations are missing once more , and she also dislikes the tree that Heinz bought, as it already begins to needles during the construction. Heinz, exasperated by the hustle and bustle, goes to Hilde and almost demolishes a drawer in the living room cupboard. In the afternoon he has made himself comfortable on the sofa with a beer, while Hilde, stressed, rushes through the apartment between the kitchen and bathroom and distributes instructions. They notice that the tree is still not firmly in its stand and that they have forgotten to attach the fairy lights .

The situation threatens to escalate at dinner at the kitchen table. Heinz is irritated and provokes Hilde with his silence. While Stefan tries to mediate, Hilde makes a good face to the bad game and reminisces about previous Christmas parties. The family moves into the living room to give presents . While Heinz comes up with a pressure cooker and spaghetti tongs for his wife, Stefan surprises his mother with a gold brooch. Over a glass of sparkling wine , there is a scandal after Hilde notices the absence of the Christmas tree top, which Heinz vehemently contradicts. When he then wants to realign the crooked Christmas tree, it tilts out of its stand and falls onto the living room table.

success

Since it was first broadcast on July 19, 1994, the episode has been repeated annually on the holidays on the First and Third TV programs . Every year has since been declared by the media as a cult or “modern Christmas classic”.
