Algeciras is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Huila in Colombia .

geography

Algeciras is located to the east of Huila in the Subnorte sub- region in the Colombian Andes . Adjacent to the community in northwestern Hobo , Campo Alegre and Rivera , in the east San Vicente del Caguan , Puerto Rico and El Doncello in Departamento del Caquetá and southwest Gigante .

population

The municipality of Algeciras has 24,708 inhabitants, of which 15,740 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

The area of ​​today's Algeciras was opened up in 1824 in search of natural rubber , cinchona bark and gold . After the cinchona boom was over and no gold was found, it was a small village. The village received parish status in 1924 as San Juanito . San Juanito was given its current name in 1937 in honor of the Spanish city of Algeciras .
