Gigante is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Huila in Colombia .

geography

Gigante is located in Huila , in the Subcentro sub-region , 84 km from Neiva at an altitude of 808  m above sea level. NN and has an average temperature of 24 ° C. The area of ​​the municipality lies in the valley of the upper reaches of the Río Magdalena between the mountain Cerro Matambo and the Eastern Cordillera of the Colombian Andes . The municipality borders in the north on Hobo and Algeciras , in the south on Garzón , in the east on Algeciras and El Paujil in the department of Caquetá and in the west on Agrado , Paicol , Tesalia and Yaguará .

history

A village had existed in what is now the municipality of Gigante since at least 1698. The founding date is generally regarded as 1782, when a paper was signed that allowed more intensive development of the local area. Gigante has had parish status since 1789. The origin of the name is unclear, but there are three theories: Either the name goes back to the discovery of a mammoth skeleton in the region, or it is derived from the name of a hacienda that bore this name, or it refers to the mountain Cerro Matambo whose shape is reminiscent of the perfil of a giant.
