Ismael Perdomo Borrero (born February 22, 1872 in Gigante , Colombia , † June 3, 1950 in Bogotá ) was Archbishop of Bogotá .

Life

Ismael Perdomo Borrero studied among other things at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and was ordained a priest there on December 19, 1896 by Cardinal Lucido Maria Parocchi . In 1899 he returned to Colombia and was among other things vice-rector of the seminary of Garzón and parish priest.

Pope Leo XIII. appointed him on June 8, 1903 as the first bishop of the three years earlier established diocese of Ibagué . He was ordained bishop on June 19 of the same year by Girolamo Maria Cardinal Gotti , Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation De Propaganda Fide . Co- consecrators were Giuseppe Maria Costantini , Bishop Emeritus of Nepi e Sutri, and Esteban Rojas Tovar , Bishop of Garzón . In 1908, 1912 and 1919 he was secretary of the national bishops' conferences. Pope Pius XI appointed him on February 5, 1923 titular archbishop of Traianopolis in Rhodope and appointed him coadjutor archbishop of Bogotá.

After the death of Archbishop Bernardo Herrera Restrepo on January 2, 1928, Perdomo Borrero succeeded him against the will of the Colombian government. In the same year Pius XI appointed him. to the papal assistant throne . He was also President of the Colombian Bishops' Conference from 1928 until his death. Before the presidential elections in 1930 he stood up for the conservative candidate Alfredo Vásquez Cobo , who lost the election. In 1948 he had the parishes in the city of Bogotá restructured. Ismael Perdomo Borrero died in June 1950.

Beatification process

The beatification process began in January 1962. Pope Francis awarded him the heroic degree of virtue on July 7, 2017 .
