The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ibagué ( Latin Archidioecesis Ibaguensis , Spanish Archidiócesis de Ibagué ) is an in Colombia situated Roman Catholic diocese based in Ibagué . It covers part of the Colombian department of Tolima .
history
Pope Leo XIII. founded it on May 20, 1900 from cession of territory by the diocese of Tolima , which was dissolved at the same time, and it was subordinated to the archbishopric Popayán as a suffragan diocese. With the Apostolic Constitution Quamquam Ecclesiarum it was raised to the rank of Metropolitan Archbishopric on December 14, 1974 .
It lost parts of its territory in favor of the establishment of the following dioceses:
- March 18, 1957 to the diocese of Espinal ;
- July 8, 1989 to the Diocese of Líbano-Honda .
