The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Popayán ( lat. : Archidioecesis Popayanensis , span. : Arquidiócesis de Popayán ) is an in Colombia situated Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Popayán .
history
The Archdiocese of Popayán was on August 22, 1546 by Pope Paul III. established with the Apostolic Constitution Super specula militantis Ecclesiae from cessions of territory from the Diocese of Panamá as the Diocese of Popayán . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Lima as a suffragan . On March 22, 1564, the Popayán diocese was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Santafé en Nueva Granada as a suffragan. The diocese Popayán gave on May 28, 1803 parts of its territory to establish the diocese Maynas . Further territorial assignments took place on August 31, 1804 to found the Diocese of Antioquía , on April 10, 1859 to found the Diocese of Pasto and in 1894 to found the Diocese of Tolima .
On June 20, 1900 the diocese Popayán by Pope Leo XIII. raised to the archbishopric. The Archdiocese of Popayán gave up on June 7, 1910 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Cali . Further assignments were made on May 13, 1921 to found the Apostolic Prefecture Tierradentro and on December 17, 1952 to found the Diocese of Palmira .
