Pitalito is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Huila in Colombia . After Neiva, Pitalito has the second highest population in Huila.
geography
Pitalito lies at an altitude between 1000 and 1800 meters. Pitalito is 188 km south of Neiva . The municipality borders in the north on Timaná , Elías and Saladoblanco , in the west on Isnos and San Agustín , in the south on Palestina and Santa Rosa in the Departamento del Cauca and in the east on Acevedo .

history
The first establishment of a place on the site of today's Pitalito took place in 1553, on the instructions of the conquistador Sebastián de Belalcázar , by Pedro de Añasco . Her name was guacacallo . After the destruction by Alvaro de Oyón , the city was rebuilt slightly offset. At that point you can find San Calixto de Timaná today . The city of modern Pitalito was founded on June 13, 1818 by José Hilario Sierra . However, he did not re-found the city, but replaced it as the successor to the village of Laboyo , which in turn had emerged from a hacienda of the same name . Ignacio Cabrera y Rojas was appointed as the first mayor of the new city on January 6, 1821 in Garzón by the City Council of Timaná.

etymology
The name Pitalito is probably a diminutive of the Spanish word pital , which means plantation of the Aechme plant and goes back to the plantations created by the colonizers.
