The Departamento del Huila [ depaɾtaˈmento del ˈwila ] is a department in southwest Colombia . It is surrounded by the departments of Meta and Caquetá in the east and by Cauca and Tolima in the west. It also borders Cundinamarca and the capital city of Bogotá, Distrito Capital, over a short distance to the north .
The Río Magdalena , Colombia's largest river, starts in the Huila department. Some of the larger cities are in its river valley.
The economy is based on agriculture and cattle farming . There are rice , sugar cane , bananas , tobacco , coffee and sorghum grown. The industry plays a subordinate role and specializes in handicrafts, ceramics and hats. Huila owns oil and gas reserves.
The archaeological park of San Agustín , where finds of the San Agustín culture can be found , is of great tourist interest .
