Palermo is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Huila in Colombia .

geography

Palermo is located in Huila , in the Subnorte sub- region , 18 km from Neiva and has an average temperature of 26 ° C. The municipality has four different geographical zones. In the west, Palermo has a share of the central cordillera of the Colombian Andes . The urban part of the municipality is located in a valley to which a chain of hills adjoins to the east, which is characterized by granite stone . The east of the municipality lies in the valley of the upper reaches of the Río Magdalena . Palermo belongs to the unofficial but de facto existing metropolitan area of Neiva . The municipality borders in the north on Neiva and Planadas , in the south on Yaguará and Teruel , in the east on Rivera , Campoalegre and Neiva and in the west on Santa María and Neiva and Planadas in Tolima .

The municipality of Palermo has 34,987 inhabitants, 16,999 of whom live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality. 499,213 people live in the metropolitan region (as of 2019).

history

The territory of the municipality was at the arrival of the Spaniards from the indigenous people of Paez populated. The current place goes back to a settlement in 1632 and was called Guagua for a long time . Guagua received the status of a parish in 1774. The community has had its current name since 1906.

The main industries in Palermo are mining (especially coal , limestone , gold ), agriculture (especially rice and coffee ), animal husbandry (especially cattle , dairy cows and pigs ), pond farming and industry .
