The Diocese of Arauca ( lat. : Dioecesis Araucensis , span. : Diócesis de Arauca ) is an in Colombia situated Roman Catholic diocese based in Arauca .

history

Pope Benedict XV founded the Apostolic Prefecture Arauca on May 26, 1915 from cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate Casanare . On November 11, 1970, she was promoted to the Apostolic Vicariate .

On July 19, 1984, it was raised to a diocese, which was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Nueva Pamplona as a suffragan diocese. In 1989, Jesús Emilio Jaramillo Monsalve, the first bishop of the diocese, was killed by the ELN guerrillas.
