Tierradentro

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tierradentro region is located in an inaccessible part of the Colombian Central Cordillera . Tierradentro is the traditional settlement area of the Páez- Indians (own name: Nasa) who live from agriculture.

Near San Andrés de Pisimbalá (in the neighboring valley of Inzá ) lies the Parque Arqueológico Nacional de Tierradentro, one of the most important archaeological sites in Colombia. Since 1995, the Park is on the UNESCO list of world heritage of mankind.

In the Parque arqueológico are the remains of the so-called Tierradentro culture. Little is known about this culture. The shaft graves , which are up to five meters deep, are carved into the rock . Up to 100 urns were found in the side niches of the burial chambers . The walls of the best-preserved chambers are painted with geometric patterns in white, black and red.
