Jesús Emilio Jaramillo Monsalve MXY (born February 14, 1916 in Santo Domingo , Departamento de Antioquia ; † October 2, 1989 at Fortul , Departamento de Arauca ) was a Colombian religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Arauca . In the Catholic Church he is venerated as a blessed .

Life

Jesús Emilio Jaramillo Monsalve joined the Congregation of the Missionaries Javerianos de Yarumal in and received on 11 January 1940, the sacrament of Holy Orders .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on November 11, 1970 Vicar Apostolic of Arauca and Titular Bishop of Strumnitza . The Apostolic Nuncio in Colombia, Archbishop Angelo Palmas , donated him episcopal ordination on January 10 of the following year . Co - consecrators were Aníbal Muñoz Duque , coadjutor archbishop of Bogotá , and Joaquín García Ordóñez , coadjutor bishop of Santa Rosa de Osos .

With the elevation of the Apostolic Vicariate to the diocese of Arauca on July 19, 1984, he became its first diocesan bishop . After repeatedly speaking out against actions by the left-wing terrorist ELN , he was kidnapped, tortured and murdered near Fortul on October 2, 1989 .

In the beatification process initiated for him , Pope Francis recognized his martyrdom on July 7, 2017 . During his pastoral trip to Colombia, the Pope beatified him and the priest Pedro María Ramírez Ramos, who was murdered in 1948, on September 8, 2017.
