Avianca Express is a Colombian regional airline founded in December 2018 . It is one of the Avianca Holdings and as part of the adjustment plan for their operating model and looking for more profitability and efficiency thought. Initially took off under the working title Regional Express Américas SAS ( REA ) from spring 2019, it has been flying under the newly defined brand since mid-February 2020 .

The specialty of Avianca Holdings' new strategy is that the flights are not routed through the aviation hubs Bogotá-Eldorado and Medellín-Rionegro , but from point to point . Avianca Holdings received air traffic approval for the Colombian regional market from the national Aerocivil in February 2018 .

Avianca Express has been focusing on regional routes from Bogotá to cities such as Manizales , Florencia , Villavicencio , Yopal , Neiva , Ibagué and Popayán and from Cali to Pasto and Tumaco since March 1st, 2019 . From August 2019 also between Bucaramanga and Cartagena .

From March 30, 2020, Avianca Express will also start operations at Olaya Herrera Airport in Medellín , which Avianca has not served for 20 years , with connections to Quibdó , Montería and Bucaramanga . Apart from that, a new flight plan comes into force, which includes improvements in connections to and from Bogotá and a new connection to Barrancabermeja .

The flight operations are carried out exclusively with a fleet of the type ATR 72-600 , a turboprop regional airliner for freight and passenger services. The aircraft type suits regional airports with shorter runways and a rather limited aviation infrastructure. In return, the parent company Avianca has gradually withdrawn from the regional centers and only serves important national and international destinations.
