Avianca Ecuador (until the beginning of 2018 AeroGal ) is an Ecuadorian airline based in Quito and based at Quito Airport . It belongs to Avianca Holdings and has been operating externally under the Avianca Ecuador brand since June 2014.
history
The company was founded in November 1985 as AeroGal (officially Aerolineas Galapagos). The start of flight operations took place in 1986 with the Dornier Do 28 D Skyservant . At the end of 2009, 80% of the airline was taken over by the Synergy Group , which also owns Avianca Holdings . The change of ownership had no effect on the company's name or branding. In order to expand the fleet, letters of intent for the procurement of 51 aircraft from the manufacturer Airbus were made at the 2011 Paris Air Show .
Avianca Holdings merged the Ecuadorian airline VIP with AeroGal in 2012 . This initially continued flight operations under its previous name. From June 19, 2014, AeroGal appeared externally under the brand Avianca Ecuador, but the official company name was not changed accordingly. At the same time, their planes were given the red and white livery of the Avianca umbrella brand , which all aircraft of all Avianca Holdings subsidiaries carry.
At the beginning of 2018, the company was officially renamed Avianca Ecuador SA. The existing AeroGal Air Operator Certificate is used to continue flight operations .
Destinations
Although the name and the paint scheme referred to the Galapagos Islands, it was not until the end of 2003 that AeroGal was allowed to fly to the Galápagos Islands . Connections within Ecuador and the Galápagos were served from their hubs in Quito and Guayaquil. In addition to Bogotá in Colombia, the international destinations also included destinations outside South America. In 2014, AeroGal made regular flights to New York and Miami .
