history

Aviateca: Departure from Tikal for Guatemala City (1971)

The airline was founded on March 14, 1945 as Empresa Guamalteca de Aviacion SA , Aviateca for short . It was the successor to Aerovias de Guatemala , which was founded in 1929.

The first flight with a Douglas DC-3 took place in March 1946 . From 1961 flights to Miami followed with a four-engine DC-6 . For the routes in Latin America , the DC-3 was by Convair 340 / 440 replaces. In 1970 Aviateca became a customer of British Aerospace for the BAC 1-11 . In the 1970s, a Fokker F28 , a Boeing 720 and a DC-8 were temporarily leased. Aviateca acquired two Boeing 727s from Eastern Air Lines that flew in the 1980s. From 1989 the fleet consisted of several Boeing 737-200s and 737-300s. A 737-300 freighter was also in service for a few months.

Until 1989 Aviateca was owned by the government of Guatemala, then it was incorporated into the airline Alliance of Central America organized by TACA and privatized. Today it is fully integrated with TACA Regional Airlines. From 2006 Aviateca operated an Airbus A319 with the TACA-style Aviateca logo on the engines. 5 TACA ATR 42 were registered for Aviateca in Guatemala. Due to restructuring measures at Avianca Holdings , Aviateca was renamed Avianca Guatemala .

  • On August 9, 1995 an Aviateca Boeing 737-200 (N125GU) had an accident on a flight from Guatemala City to San Salvador . When the machine flew towards a thunderstorm, it was decided to avoid it. A GPWS warning sounded during this maneuver . Although the crew gave full thrust after the warning tone sounded, they were no longer able to avert the collision with the Chichontepec volcano at an altitude of 1,800 meters. All 65 occupants of the machine died (see also Aviateca flight 901 ) .
