Avianca Holdings SA (until 2013 AviancaTaca Holding SA ) is a holding company based in Panama City , under whose roof the two airlines Avianca from Colombia and TACA from El Salvador as well as eight other airlines are united. The majority shareholder of Avianca Holdings is BRW Aviation (51.43%) in the USA. Avianca Holdings provides tourism, engineering, maintenance and specialist maintenance services. The company carried 30.5 million passengers in 2018.

The holding company was founded in February 2010 and calls itself a "multi-latam company", ie a company in which several Latin American airlines are involved. The Brazilian- Colombian businessman Germán Efromovich was President and Chairman of the Supervisory Board from 2004 to 2019.

Avianca Holdings is the third largest airline holding company in Latin America by revenue , after the Brazilian-Chilean LATAM Airlines Group and the Brazilian low-cost airline Gol Transportes Aéreos . With a fleet of over 189 aircraft (2017) and a passenger volume of over 30.5 million passengers (2018), it is the second largest airline in South America.

Comparable holding companies in Europe are the International Airlines Group and Air France-KLM .

Shareholder structure

The Synergy Group is the largest shareholder via BRW Aviation LLC in Delaware with 78.1%, followed by Kingsland Holdings ( Bahamas ) with 14.46%. The remainder are in free float (date May 24, 2019). Avianca Holdings is pursuing the strategic plan of entering into an alliance with United Airlines and obtaining a capital injection through an offer to the shareholders.

Since June 21, 2012, Avianca and TACA members of the airline alliance Star Alliance .

The airlines of Avianca Holdings SA operate from two strategically distributed, important Latin American hubs : Bogotá (Colombia) and San Salvador (El Salvador). With a modern fleet of over 180 short, medium and long-haul aircraft and a team of more than 21,000 employees, they fly directly to over 105 destinations in America and Europe . A further 750 connections exist through this through codeshare agreements with other members of the Star Alliance . The companies of Avianca Holdings carried more than 30.5 million passengers in 2018 and have 7.8 million customers in their frequent flyer program LifeMiles . All airlines appear with the corporate design of the over 100 year old Colombian Avianca .

Pandemic Crisis and Chapter 11

Avianca Holdings SA announced on May 10, 2020 that it was voluntarily submitting itself to Chapter 11 of the North American Bankruptcy Act in the Southern New York Bankruptcy Court "to maintain and reorganize the company's business." Chapter 11 regulates a reorganization of the company's finances supervised by the court. The announcement is one of the direct consequences of the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic .
