The Aeropuerto Internacional El Salvador "Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero" is located about 40 km southeast of San Salvador , the capital of El Salvador , in the municipality of Comalapa near the Pacific coast. It is the aviation hub of the airline Avianca El Salvador and the main airport in El Salvador.
San Salvador Airport has been named after Óscar Romero , the Archbishop of San Salvador who was murdered in 1980, since 2014 .
history
The government of El Salvador entrusted the public institution CEPA with the construction of the airport. Construction began in 1976 and the opening took place in 1980. The construction was carried out by the Japanese Hazama Group (株式会社 間 組 Kabushiki-gaisha Hazama-gumi). The airport is operated by the Commission Ejecutiva Portuaria Autónoma . In 2014 the name of the airport was changed to the name of the murdered liberation theologian and bishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero .
The airport has two asphalt runways, with only runway 07/25 being used for international flights due to its length. In the terminal there are restaurants, cafeterias, bars, a duty free shop, banks, a post office and car rental companies. Terminal also has 22 check-in counters and 14 passenger boarding bridges . There is space for 17 aircraft at the main terminal and three more at the freight terminal.
CSL Comalapa serves as the base for US Navy operations in the airport area .

Most of the connections are daily to North, Central and South American cities such as B. Montreal , Los Angeles , New York City , Mexico City , Havana , Lima . There is also a connection to Europe ( Madrid ).

In addition to passenger traffic, the airport is also important for cargo flights. It is served by DHL , FedEx , UPS Airlines and TNT Airways, among others .
The airport serves as the home base of the companies TACA - Avianca San Salvador and from 2013 to 2017 of Veca Airlines .
Incidents
- On August 9, 1995, a crashed Boeing 737-200 of Aviateca (N125GU) on a flight from Guatemala City to San Salvador. When the machine flew towards a thunderstorm, it was decided to avoid it. A GPWS warning sounded during this maneuver . Although the crew gave full thrust after the warning tone sounded, they were no longer able to avert the collision with the Chichontepec volcano at an altitude of 1,800 meters. All 65 occupants of the machine died (see also Aviateca flight 901 ) .
