Germán Efromovich (born March 28, 1950 in La Paz , Bolivia ) is a Jewish businessman with Brazilian , Colombian and Polish citizenship. Efromovich was CEO of Avianca Holdings from 2004 to 2019 .

Life

In search of a new home, after the Second World War , the parents left Poland for South America , first to Bolivia , where he was born, and later to Chile , where Germán Efromovich was raised in Arica from 1955 and in São Paulo , Brazil, from 1964 . He is a graduate of the former Faculdade de Engenharia Industrial (FEI) in the state of São Paulo , where he studied mechanical engineering . Originally he also sold encyclopedias and owned a private school in São Bernardo do Campo before devoting himself to consolidating his now multi-billion dollar oil and aviation empire. Initially engaged in material testing for the Brazilian state oil company Petrobras , Efromovich then focused his business goals on building and leasing oil rigs . After one of these rigs sank in the sea and a subsequent legal dispute with the insurance company and the state Petrobras, he turned to the aviation business. This happened more by chance, as one of the customers could not pay in cash, instead he left two planes as a deposit. This was the beginning of an air taxi company. Together with his brother José Efromovich , who was five years his junior , he founded OceanAir ; initially they transported workers from the oil industry in Macaé to and from Rio de Janeiro .

“At the time we were in the oil business in Macaé . A customer failed to pay the bill and offered two planes in exchange for the services. So we started with the planes to transport personnel and our friends who asked us to fly with them. I then realized that I could earn money with it. "

- José Efromovich (original quote from his brother)

Avianca

In 1998 he founded the Brazilian airline OceanAir, which was renamed Avianca Brazil from April 2010 . He later bought the Colombian airline Avianca for US $ 64 million in 2004 and assumed US $ 220 million in debt and lease liabilities. Today the airline has a fleet of more than 150 larger aircraft. The holding company AviancaTaca, now Avianca Holdings , made a profit of 202 billion pesos (US $ 114 million) in 2011 . In recognition of his commitment to investing in Avianca as well as in large oil fields, he was granted Colombian citizenship in 2005.

Synergy Group and Synergy Aerospace

He controls and holds shares in his company, Synergy Group , founded in 2003 , an industrial conglomerate. The company provides oil exploration services and serves domestic airlines. The company is otherwise involved in power generation, as well as in the oil and telecommunications sectors. The company is based in Rio de Janeiro . Efromovich is also with the subholding Synergy Aerospace Corp. based in Bogotá , to which Avianca Holdings belongs, is involved in Wayraperú , VIP Ecuador and Avianca (Brasil).

Efromovich has been a director of Pacific Rubiales Energy Corp and Pacific Stratus Energy since June 16, 2007 . He was managing director of Avianca-Holding from 2004 to 2019. He had to vacate the post in spring 2019 under pressure from United Airlines . The reason was "unfulfilled conditions" on a $ 456 million United loan to Avianca.

He is a member of the Board of Governors of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and director of Avianca , Colombia's national airline .

Private

His family was of Jewish descent and originally from Poland, which is why he had his Polish citizenship established in 2012 through the principle of descent . Germán has a five years younger brother named José Efromovich with whom he works. He is married to Hilda Efromovich, has three daughters and lives alternately in São Paulo and Bogotá . He is known to have simple habits. He travels in economy class on international flights , he does not have a private jet and his car was more than four years old in 2005.
