The LATAM Airlines Group is a holding company that was created in 2012 through the merger of the Chilean LAN Airlines and the Brazilian TAM Linhas Aéreas . With the operational merger of the two airlines under a common brand from 2015, LATAM Airlines became by far the largest airline in Latin America, even if the two operational subsidiaries are still legally separated.
On May 26, 2020, she filed an application for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
Companies
The formation of the group was announced by both companies on August 13, 2010. Like the Chilean antitrust authorities in September 2011, the Brazilian authorities gave the go-ahead for the merger on December 14, 2011. The merger took place in June 2012.
The new group of companies includes LAN Airlines and its subsidiaries in various South American countries, TAM Linhas Aéreas from Brazil with its subsidiary from Paraguay, and all LAN and TAM holdings. In 2011, 65 million passengers were carried. In 2015, the launch of the new LATAM brand was announced. This is currently being launched on the market in May 2016 and is expected to replace the old brands within three years. LATAM has (as of December 2015) a fleet of 327 aircraft. 135 destinations are served in the passenger area and a further 11 in the cargo area. At the end of 2015, LATAM had 50,413 employees in 26 countries. Revenue in 2015 was $ 10.1 billion.
Both companies kept their operations centers in Santiago de Chile and São Paulo , the headquarters of LATAM is in Santiago de Chile. At first it was unclear which aviation alliance LATAM would belong to. At the time of the merger, LAN was a member of Oneworld , TAM of Star Alliance . The approval of the Chilean antitrust authorities was given on condition that the new company had to decide on one of the two alliances by the end of 2014. TAM decided in March 2013 to join Oneworld in the second quarter of 2014 and to leave the Star Alliance.
