The Avenida El Dorado in Bogotá , mostly known as Calle 26 , officially Avenida El Dorado Jorge Eliecer Gaitán , is an east-west transversal crossing the city that cuts the Colombian capital from south-east to north-west. It is the most important and efficient road system in Bogotá and also the preferred address for many national and international corporations. Luxury hotels, airlines, banks and modern business centers are located along the Avenida.

Surname

The name is derived from the word Eldorado ("The Golden"), the legendary gold country in the interior of northern South America . Eldorado is based on a Colombian legend that aroused a thirst for adventure among the conquistadors of the 16th century and on the basis of which numerous expeditions to the unexplored Central South America were organized. In 1525 the Spaniards came across the Caribbean to the area of Indian high cultures and looked for gold . Spanish chroniclers have been reporting on the supposed gold country since the 17th century.

history

TransMilenio stop on Avenida El Dorado

The approximately 15 km long, almost intersection - free, multi-lane expressway was built between 1952 and 1958 to connect the Bogotá airport, which opened in 1959, with the historic city center of Santa Fe with an efficient traffic axis. The "Eldorado" begins right at the foot of the Monserrate mountain , the landmark of Bogotá.

In 2012 the “Eldorado” with stops was integrated into the TransMilenio system.

Urban development

As far as urban development is concerned, a lot will change in Bogotá in the next few years, as the Alcaldia Mayor de Bogotá ( Mayor's Office) had an updated zoning plan (Plan de Ordenamiento Territorial) drawn up in 2014–2015 . It provides for the construction of three further main traffic axes together with the expansion of the TransMilenio system. The land prices on the "Eldorado" are still competitive, despite the upgrading of the area such as B. through the project Ciudad Empresarial Sarmiento Angulo and the Bacatá Center , both of which were started at the beginning of the 2010s when the square meter still cost 6,300,000 pesos (approx. 2,000 euros).

The most important and ambitious project, however, is the Megaproyecto Río Bogotá , with the decontamination and recovery of the water quality of the Río Bogotá , as well as the restoration of the natural environment (Adecuación Hidráulica y Recuperación Ambiental del Río Bogotá), in the area of the heavily polluted river. The redesign of the banks of the Río Bogotá is currently in full swing and is being turned into park-like green areas with water sports facilities for the Bogotanos.

location

The Avenida El Dorado ends directly at El Dorado Airport in the district of Fontibón , after it stretches across the capital from the foot of the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes . Around two kilometers after the start, the "Eldorado" meets the Autopista Norte , or Avenida Ciudad de Quito , abbreviation Avenida NQS , which connects the northern districts of Bogotá with the center. Both expressways meet at a motorway junction in the Teusaquillo district . The south of the capital is linked from the intersection with the Autopista Sur .

meaning

This generously laid out traffic axis offers advantages for business people and tourists, because you can get from the airport directly to the city in just 15 minutes for only the equivalent of two to 15 US dollars .
