The Sun-1 was the first series of Unix-based servers and workstations from Sun Microsystems .

The Sun-1 was developed by Andreas von Bechtolsheim during his time at Stanford University . Since he could not find a company that wanted to build this computer under license, he decided to found the company Sun with Vinod Khosla , Scott McNealy and Bill Joy , whose first product was the Sun-1. The first prototype was presented on February 24, 1982, and delivery started in May / June.

A Motorola 68000 clocked at 10 MHz , later also a Motorola 68010 , was used as the processor . Originally the Sun-1 had 256 KB main memory , which was later expanded to 1 MB. A maximum memory expansion of 2 MB was possible. As a bus system of came from Intel developed Multibus used. The 17 " monitor was built into one housing together with the motherboard .

A port of Version 7 Unix from UniSoft was used as the operating system . As an alternative, SunOS could also be used on the models with processors of type 68010 .

The Sun-1 was followed by two other workstation families, the Sun-2 and Sun-3, which also used processors from Motorola's 68000 family . Only with the Sun-4 did a workstation come with the SPARC processor developed by Sun. Market.
