Life and work

After graduating from high school in 1983, he was drafted into the GDR border troops and was subject to the shooting order , which he now rejects. He then began a teacher training course, which he completed in 1990 at the University of Education in Leipzig as a qualified teacher. After reunification he studied political science at the University of Magdeburg until 1993 and then headed the Havelberg youth center until 1994.

Gallert is married and has two children.

Political party

In 1986, Gallert joined the SED . In 1992 he took over the chairmanship of the PDS district association in Havelberg for two years. Since the merger of Linkspartei.PDS and WASG on June 16, 2007, Gallert has been a member of Die Linke .

MP

Gallert was elected to the Havelberg district council in the local elections in 1990, where he became chairman of the PDS parliamentary group. In 1994 he was elected to the Stendal district council, to which he belonged until 1999.

In 1994, Gallert was elected to the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt for the first time , in which he held the post of parliamentary director of the PDS parliamentary group until June 2004. Together with his SPD colleague Jens Bullerjahn , Wulf Gallert organized the cohesion of the minority government tolerated by the PDS under Prime Minister Reinhard Höppner (1994-2002), the Magdeburg model (Cabinets Höppner I and II ).

In 2004, Gallert took over the chairmanship of the parliamentary group and thus became the leader of the opposition against the state government of the CDU and FDP (2002-2006) led by Prime Minister Böhmer . In the state elections in 2006 he ran as the top candidate of the Left Party.PDS and achieved the second-best election result with his party just ahead of the SPD. After the state elections, the SPD did not accept Gallert's coalition offers, but instead joined a government of the grand coalition (CDU / SPD) headed by Wolfgang Böhmer, in which Jens Bullerjahn became finance minister .

In the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt on March 20, 2011 , Gallert stood as the top candidate of the left. He had accepted the candidacy with the declared aim of succeeding the outgoing Prime Minister Wolfgang Böhmer . His party received 23.7% of the vote (less than 2006), 8.8 percentage points less than the CDU. He ran for a direct mandate in the south of Magdeburg ( state constituency 13 ), but was defeated by the established MP Dieter Steinecke (politician, 1944) , who with 33.5% of the vote was ahead of Gallert (26.6%) and SPD state chief Katrin Budde ( 24.8%). On March 22, 2011, Gallert was unanimously re-elected group chairman by the 29 members of the Left Group.

In February 2015, the regional executive committee of the Left Party nominated Gallert as the top candidate for the state election in spring 2016 . After the losses suffered by his party (−7.4 percentage points to 16.32%), he resigned as group leader on March 14, 2016. On April 12, 2016 he was elected Vice President of the State Parliament of Saxony-Anhalt.
