The Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg (OVGU) (pronunciation: [... ˈgeːʁɪkə ...]) was founded in 1993 and is one of the youngest universities in Germany.

The roots of the university named after Otto von Guericke lie in the three higher education institutions previously existing in the city of Magdeburg , Technical University , Pedagogical University and Magdeburg Medical Academy . With nine faculties and almost 14,000 students, it forms a university center for teaching and research in Saxony-Anhalt .

Magdeburg looks back on a relatively short academic tradition. In contrast to other university towns with a long history, the first universities were founded in the young GDR in the 1950s. Otto von Guericke University was founded in 1993 from the Technical University of Magdeburg , the Medical Academy Magdeburg and the Magdeburg University of Education .

The first university in the city was the Magdeburg University of Heavy Engineering , which was founded in 1953 . Since Magdeburg was the most important location for heavy machine construction in the GDR and suffered from an acute shortage of engineers , it was in the state's interest to counter this shortage through academic training on site. After a short time, in 1961 the name was changed to Magdeburg University of Technology before it was declared a Technical University in 1987.

As in the case of well-trained engineers, there was a lack of doctors in the early GDR , so that in addition to the traditional university locations of Berlin , Halle , Jena , Leipzig , Greifswald and Rostock, three medical academies were founded, in addition to Magdeburg these were Dresden and Erfurt . In the winter semester of 1954/55, the Magdeburg Medical Academy (MAM) opened its doors for the first time on the site of the former Sudenburg Hospital. The founding rector of the new university was the pathologist Hasso Eßbach . The special thing about it was that at that point the course was only reduced to the clinical section after passing the Physikum , so the students must have all successfully studied at other universities for two years. At the turn of the year 1960/1961, the pre-clinical study phase up to the physikum was established.

The third origin of the Otto von Guericke University is the Erich Weinert University of Education in Magdeburg , which was the last to be founded , which was supposed to counter the shortage of teachers in the then Magdeburg district .

On October 3, 1993, the three previous institutions merged to form Otto von Guericke University. Magdeburg University owes its two campuses, the University Clinic and Universitätsplatz (including the former University of Education, today the FHW), to the fact that there are three underlying universities .

Otto von Guericke , who was already the namesake of the Technical University, was chosen as the namesake . Neuroscience: Center for Behavioral Brain Sciences (CBBS)

As part of this research focus, scientists from six faculties of the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg, the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology and the Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases DZNE are researching memory formation, learning processes, the motivation of targeted action, decision-making and the physiological and pathophysiological processes of the Brain plasticity, neuromodulation and cognition. Dynamic Systems and Biosystems Technology (CDS)

Scientists from Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems want to decode and specifically influence complex dynamic systems within the framework of the research focus of Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg with the participation of five faculties. Medical school

For historical reasons, the medical faculty with the Magdeburg University Hospital is locally separated from the rest of the university in the Leipziger Strasse district south of Magdeburg's city center on the site of the former Medical Academy . Only the university women's clinic is located in the building complex of the former state women's clinic in Stadtfeld Ost, west of the city center.

The university clinic , located in the south of the city, is the university's second campus, the training center for over 1000 prospective doctors and at the same time a center for medical care for the citizens of Saxony-Anhalt. The Medical Faculty maintains two main research areas. These are the neuroscience major and the immunology major including the molecular medicine of inflammation. In close cooperation with the Otto von Guericke University and the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology (IfN), which is also heavily involved in the training of neurobiology and neuroscience students, Magdeburg has been developed into a leading center for neuroscientific research. Europe's first 7-Tesla high-field magnetic resonance tomograph is located on the clinic premises. It is the most powerful device in the world and enables the highest image quality for neuroscientific research purposes.

A science center for applied brain research and medical technology (ZENIT - Center for Neuroscientific Innovation and Technology), which is unique in Europe, was inaugurated on the campus of the university clinic in June 1998. Scientists from private research companies, from university institutes and clinics and employees of the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems can work in this complex .

The research focus “Immunology including the molecular medicine of inflammation” of the Medical Faculty was also systematically expanded. The decoding of the molecular processes that influence cellular function in the healthy organism and in disease situations is the focus of research in the immunological focus.

Another focus of immunological and cell biological research at the University Hospital deals with a new research area, systems biology . This is anchored in the University Research Center Dynamic Systems (CDS) and is funded in the excellence offensive “Networks of Scientific Excellence in Saxony-Anhalt”. The Faculty of Economics was founded in 1993. At the beginning about 1000 students studied in the offered courses. In the 2018/2019 winter semester, 2,414 students were studying at the FWW. In 1999, the faculty was one of the first universities in Germany to introduce a completely English-language Bachelor's degree. Due to various appointments (among others from Birgitta Wolff ) the faculty could be oriented internationally. In addition to the “International Management” course, the faculty also offers numerous exchange programs, among others funded by the German Academic Exchange Service or the Erasmus program .

The Magdeburg Faculty of Economics pursues an integrated approach that links normative and positive research. The focus is on the application of quantitative methods and the use of experimental research methodology. On this basis, scientific advice in the business and economic area is to be developed. In the light of this research concept, the entire research focus is divided into three individual departments. In the "Decision Making" area, fundamental questions of decision-making in an economic context are examined, while the areas "Business Advice" and "Policy Advice" focus on the application of normative and positive approaches with the aim of corporate and political advice.

Since the university was founded from the Medical Academy, the Pedagogical University and the Technical University, it had important pillars in technical and natural science subjects, medicine and teacher training. After the university was founded, the established offer was supplemented primarily by a large number of business studies courses.

In the context of savings measures in the higher education sector by the state of Saxony-Anhalt, it was specified that only one-time provision should be guaranteed for the state's degree programs. For this reason, the teaching degree courses at Otto von Guericke University were largely canceled after 2002 in favor of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg . There remained courses for teaching at vocational schools in Magdeburg. In return, the technical subjects were concentrated in Magdeburg and reduced in Halle.

In the Bologna process , it was agreed at European level to make degree qualifications comparable. For this reason, from 2002 the range of courses at Otto von Guericke University was reduced to include diploma degrees and expanded to include bachelor and master degrees. With this changeover, new courses were introduced at the same time.

The university is particularly committed to part-time university continuing education. The number of part-time students has increased from approx. 250 (2010) to currently (as of 2018) around 400 students. The Senate of the University of Magdeburg consists of four student representatives.
