Harald Böttger (born January 27, 1940 in Berlin ) is a German theoretical physicist who mainly deals with solid-state theory and statistical physics . He worked as rector at the Technical University of Magdeburg and again at the Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg .

Life

Böttger studied physics from 1958 to 1962 at the TU Dresden and from 1962 to 1963 at the Humboldt University in Berlin. From 1963 to 1980 he worked at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR , 1963–1968 at the Institute for Crystal Physics and 1968–1980 at the Central Institute for Electron Physics .

In 1965 he received his doctorate at the Humboldt University ( temperature dependence of the optical absorption of transition elements in an octahedral environment ) and completed his habilitation in 1971 on the topic of spin-lattice interaction in diamagnetic crystals with paramagnetic additives under the academic direction of Ostap Stasiw .

From 1973 to 1976, Böttger did a work stay in the field of theoretical physics at the Physics-Technical Institute AF Joffe in St. Petersburg (then: Leningrad). A long-term, fruitful scientific collaboration with his Russian colleague VV Bryksin began here .

In 1980 he accepted a position as full professor (from 1992 C4 professor ) at the TU Magdeburg (from 1993 University of Magdeburg). From 1992 to 1993 he succeeded Richard Teßmer as Rector of the Technical University of Magdeburg and actively prepared for their merger with the other two Magdeburg universities to form Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg , which he then also served as Rector to succeed the founding Rector Jürgen Dassow . His successor in the rector's office was Thomas Strothotte .

From 1992 to 1996 he was an expert appraiser for the German Research Foundation and deputy chairman of the physics committee.

His scientific work focuses on solid-state theory and statistical physics, in particular spin-phonon interaction, lattice dynamics, charge and spin transport, disordered solids and quasicrystals . In recognition of his scientific life's work with over 170 publications including two monographs, an honorary colloquium was held at the University of Magdeburg in 2005 on the occasion of his 65th birthday.

In 2008 he ended his active service at the university. In 2005 and 2012 he was an academy lecturer at the summer academies of the German National Academic Foundation with a major evening lecture in 2012 in LaVilla “History of modern physics: Europe, China, Islam”.
