Reinhard Probst

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Reinhard Probst (born May 30, 1934 in Benndorf ; † January 12, 1999 in Magdeburg ) was a German engineer and professor of welding technology . He is one of the pioneers of welding technology with innovative applications and is a co-founder of engineering training in interdisciplinary, innovative courses. From 1976 to 1990 he held the office of rector of the Technical University, from 1987 Technical University of Magdeburg .

Live and act

Reinhard Kurt Probst was born as the son of warehouse worker Kurt Probst in Benndorf near Lutherstadt Eisleben , who worked in the "progress shaft" of the Mansfeld Combine in Eisleben. Reinhard Probst attended the Benndorf elementary school from 1940 to 1944 and then until 1952 the high school in Aschersleben , where he obtained his Abitur . Then he went to study at the traditional Bergakademie Freiberg , where he studied metal science. The training began with a pre-study internship and was accompanied by several larger internships during the course. He graduated in 1957 with a degree in metallurgy .

He started his career in 1957 as a scientific assistant at the Institute for Welding Technology (Director: Hans Neese) at the 1953 newly founded University for Heavy Engineering in Magdeburg . This young university developed steadily: from 1961 technical university, from 1987 technical university Magdeburg . Probst followed this trend with his career: 1961 assistant professor , 1963 Promotion to Doctor of Engineering (Dr.-Ing.) With the title "summa cum laude" in 1964 a lecturer and in 1969 a full professor for welding technology and welding metallurgy at the Technical University of Magdeburg. In 1970 he obtained the Facultas Docendi teaching qualification , followed by his doctorate in science (Doctor scientiae technicarum, Dr. sc. Techn.).

In 1968/69 he was deputy section director for research and then from 1969 to 1975 director of the technology section of the metalworking industry (TmvI) . During these years he made a name for the section in terms of practice-oriented teaching and industry-related research for both the teaching staff and the next generation of academics. Thus, the section headed by Probst became the model section for the field of “technology of the metalworking industry” for the entire GDR, and it was therefore awarded the Karl Marx Order in 1974.

From 1970 to 1975 he was deputy chairman of the advisory board for mechanical engineering at the Ministry of Higher and Technical Education . In this advisory board, the framework for training in the entire mechanical engineering of the GDR was developed and the first standardized curricula with teaching programs and recommended specialist literature for studying within the individual disciplines were created.

Reinhard Probst was Hans-Erich Weinschenk's successor from 1976 to early 1990 as Rector of the Technical University, which was gradually converted into the Technical University of Magdeburg from 1986 onwards during his tenure . To this end, he not only raised the level of teaching and research, but also completed the scientific disciplines with appropriate professorships. Furthermore, he intensified research cooperation with the regional heavy machinery and plant engineering combines and, despite the economically precarious situation in the GDR, set up the technical center for armatures and construction mechanization . He designed the latter as the basis for the first university civil engineering training for the districts of Halle (Saale) and Magdeburg .

In order to further develop international cooperation, he particularly expanded the relationships that already existed with the Baumann Technical University in Moscow , with the welding technology chairs in Leningrad and Kiev, and with the Paton Academy Institute for Electrofusion in Kiev.

As a specialist in gas-shielded welding , he wrote more than 50 scientific articles, 5 patents, several textbooks on welding technology and gave numerous lectures that also earned him international recognition. The Technical University of Miskolc ( Hungary ) awarded him an honorary doctorate (Dr.-Ing. E. h.) In 1990. Well-known industrial experts, scientists and several professors have emerged from Probst's academic environment .

Richard Teßmer was elected as his successor in the office of rector by the Scientific Council of the TU Magdeburg in January 1990 .
