Ernst Dieter Gilles

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ernst Dieter Gilles (born May 16, 1935 in Sankt Goarshausen ; † June 12, 2019 ) was a German professor of control engineering.

Career

Ernst Dieter Gilles studied electrical engineering at the TH Darmstadt until 1960 , received his doctorate there in 1963 and acquired his habilitation in control engineering in 1966.

From 1968 to 2005 he was professor and institute director at the University of Stuttgart at the Institute for System Dynamics and Control. In October 1997 he became the founding director of the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg and two years later honorary professor at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg . Here he initiated several interdisciplinary courses such as systems engineering and technical cybernetics as well as biosystems engineering .

His main research areas were control engineering , systems biology , modeling , system dynamics and network theory of procedural and biological processes. He received four honorary doctorates , including that of Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg in 2005. Gilles was a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech) , the Berlin-Brandenburg and Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and the Braunschweig Scientific Society .

In 2006, after twenty years of development, he completed an integrated navigation system for inland shipping. In recent years he has increasingly relied on a scientific cooperation with Ulrich Korn , which included both theoretical work and trips with the test ship.

Since 2020 the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems has been awarding the "Ernst Dieter Gilles" grant for young post-doctoral researchers.
