Hans-Günter Giessmann

Hans-Günter Gießmann (born April 17, 1922 in Berlin ; † March 11, 2014 in Magdeburg ) was a German ophthalmologist , professor and chair of ophthalmology. He was rector of the Magdeburg Medical Academy.

Live and act

Hans-Günter Gießmann studied medicine and in 1951 at the Humboldt University of Berlin with the dissertation "the influence of the blood count over by irradiation with ultraviolet light under anesthesia" doctorate . By 1958, he completed specialist training in physiology at the Physiological Institute at Humboldt University. Immediately afterwards he moved to the eye clinic of the Medical Academy Magdeburg , where he began an ophthalmological training under Andreas Heydenreich and received his habilitation in 1963 with the paper "Investigations on the pathophysiology of amblyopia" . After Heydenreich left Magdeburg in 1966 , Hans-Günter Gießmann was appointed professor and given the chair of ophthalmology and the management of the clinic .

In 1967 Hans-Günter Gießmann began introducing microsurgery in the Magdeburg clinic. In 1974 he implanted intraocular lenses here for the first time . Gießmann took care of the modernization of the historic building with the addition of an operating wing, the establishment of a library, two research laboratories for physiological optics and a laboratory for the cultivation of tissue. He also created a department for electroretinography. He headed the clinic until his retirement in 1987. From 1970 to 1973 he was rector of the Magdeburg Medical Academy.

From 1939 Hans-Günter Gießmann was a member of the German Red Cross , from 1978 president of the DRK district committee in Magdeburg and after the fall of the Berlin Wall, played a key role in founding the Saxony-Anhalt state association in 1990, of which he was honorary president.

In the GDR, Hans-Günter Gießmann was honored with the honorary title of Honored Doctor of the People , with the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver, the Hufeland Medal in gold, the Fritz Heckert Medal and the Prize for Medicine of the Council of the Magdeburg District .

Hans-Günter Gießmann died after a short, serious illness on March 11, 2014 at the age of 91.
