The Administration and Business Academy (VWA) is an educational institution under private law in Germany. Administrative and business academies are mainly organized in the Federal Association of German Administrative and Business Academies . The federal association provides its members with nationwide framework study regulations and framework examination regulations. This ensures a uniform quality standard for teaching and examinations at the member academies in the Federal Association of German Administrative and Business Academies.

The academies offer training and further education courses for specialists and executives from federal, state and local administrations as well as from business. The academies are sponsored by public and / or non-profit bodies such as states, municipalities or municipal associations, professional chambers, business associations, but also private companies. There are over 100 administrative and business academies nationwide.

Depending on the orientation of the course, the graduates are entitled to use the qualification business diploma with the respective job title and the addition (VWA) . These qualifications are advanced training qualifications and not academic degrees in the sense of university laws , as the term “ diploma ” suggests.

history

The history of the academies began in 1907 when the city of Essen and the Essen Chamber of Commerce and Industry introduced the academic courses for commercial science and general training . These should serve the in-service training as a contribution to further training for practitioners in the commercial sector. After the First World War , evening further training opportunities were also to be created for administrative officials. This gave rise to the idea of setting up independent academies for this type of advanced training. One of the first institutions of this type was the Fürst-Leopold-Verwaltungsakademie in Detmold , built in 1918 by Prince Leopold IV zur Lippe during the war , at which war-disabled officers were to be retrained to become municipal officials and which existed until 1924. The first Prussian academy, the Berlin Administrative Academy, opened in 1919; further foundings took place across Germany. In 1950 the academies set up an interest group, the Federal Association of German Administrative and Business Academies. V.

In cooperation with the Middle Neckar Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the companies Robert Bosch GmbH , Daimler-Benz and Standard Elektrik Lorenz (SEL), the Württembergische VWA developed the so-called “Stuttgart model” as a training course for high school graduates based on the courses for business administration (VWA) “, Which led to the establishment of the professional academies in 1974 . As part of the Stuttgart vocational academy , the Württembergische VWA received the order from the state of Baden-Württemberg to hold the courses for the fields of industry and data processing .

After German reunification , the administration and business academies can also be found in the new federal states . In 2016, over 100 institutions nationwide bore the name "VWA"; 16 of them are supported by a single foundation, in Berlin, Bochum, Bonn, Bremen, Darmstadt, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Essen, Frankfurt am Main, Hagen, Hamburg, Kassel, Oberhausen and Offenbach.
