2001 U-20 South American Football Championship

The XX. The 2001 U-20 South American Football Championship took place in Ecuador from January 12, 2001 to February 4, 2001 .

The matches to determine the tournament winner were held in the cities of Latacunga , Riobamba , Ambato , Cuenca , Machala , Guayaquil and Portoviejo . The national teams of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela took part in the tournament. The game was played in two groups, followed by a final phase, also in group mode. Brazil emerged victorious from the event . Places two to four went to the national teams from Argentina , Paraguay and Chile . With their placement, these four teams qualified for the U-21 World Cup in 2001 , although Argentina, as the host of the subsequent World Cup, had the right to start anyway. Therefore, Ecuador, who is fifth in the final ranking, also qualified for the World Cup.

The top scorer of the tournament were the two Brazilians Adriano and Ewerthon with six goals each.
