Ewerthon , full name Henrique Ewerthon de Souza (born June 10, 1981 in São Paulo ), is a former Brazilian football player . In Germany he became known through his time at Borussia Dortmund and VfB Stuttgart . With the Dortmund team he became German champions in 2002 , scoring the decisive goal on the last day of the match.

Career

Ewerthon began his career in São Paulo with the Roque de Morais neighborhood club , but switched to the Corinthians São Paulo city club at the age of seven . After a short time at Rio Branco EC Americana , he switched back to Corinthians.

In the current 2001/02 season , the seven-time Brazilian international moved to the Bundesliga at Borussia Dortmund for around 7.1 million euros . In his first season in Germany he won the German soccer championship with Dortmund . On the last day of the match against Werder Bremen, shortly after his substitution, he scored the goal of the 2-1 win over Werder Bremen and thus the decisive goal for the championship. In the same year the UEFA Cup final was reached, but it was lost 3-2 to Feyenoord Rotterdam . Ewerthon was in the starting line-up and was substituted for Otto Addo in the 62nd minute .

During his time in Dortmund, he scored a total of 47 goals and 17 assists in 119 league games. There are also 3 goals in 7 DFB Cup games and 4 goals in 27 European Cup appearances. His personally most successful season was the 2003/04 season , when he was Borussia's most successful goalscorer with 16 goals and together with Jan Koller . In the same season he was also substituted 14 times, which also meant a season record for Borussia Dortmund. However, in the season with 6th place in the Bundesliga, participation in the European competition was missed.

In July 2005 he moved to the Spanish Primera División for Real Saragossa for around 3.5 million euros , as Borussia Dortmund was in a difficult financial situation at the time. The transfer proceeds and the saved salary for Ewerthon should improve the financial scope of Borussia, which was ailing at the time. For Saragossa he scored 48 goals in 111 games, which is his personal best goal rate for a club team. He was also able to move into the Copa del Rey final with Saragossa in 2006 , but this was lost 4-2 to Espanyol Barcelona .

For the 2007/08 season he was loaned to the then reigning German champions VfB Stuttgart for a rental fee of 1.2 million euros . VfB secured a purchase option to bind Ewerthon to the club in the long term. Here, however, he could no longer build on his successful times at Borussia Dortmund and Real Saragossa, in eleven games he only managed one goal and one assist.

Due to the poor performance in the first half of the season, the loan deal was already dissolved in the winter break of 2007/08 between Saragossa and VfB and Ewerthon was loaned out from Saragossa to Espanyol Barcelona for the rest of the season . The loan agreement forbade Ewerthon to play in a direct duel between the two clubs in the Primera División.

After his loan contract expired, he returned to Real Zaragoza and in the 2008/09 season he scored an outstanding 28 goals in 36 league games. He could not build on this performance in the 2009/10 season, in the first half of the season he only scored 2 goals in 11 games and so he finally left Zaragoza in the winter break of the 2009/10 season.

On February 22, 2010 Ewerthon moved to Palmeiras São Paulo . After almost a year at Palmeiras, it was announced on January 7, 2011 that Ewerthon's contract with Palmeiras was terminated by mutual consent. On July 16, 2011, Ewerthon signed a one-year contract with Terek Grozny in the Russian Premjer League . After half a year he moved to Al-Ahli SC in Qatar . Just under six months later, he returned to Brazil for the second division América FC . He played there until the end of the year. After a year without a club, he ran for Atlético Sorocaba in the São Paulo state championship in early 2014 . Since then he has been without a club again and has since ended his career.

National team

Ewerthon played a total of seven senior international matches for the Brazilian national soccer team between July 2001 and July 2003 . However, he did not score a goal. He was not nominated for the two contemporaneous tournaments, the 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup , which ended in fourth place for Brazil, and the 2002 World Cup , in which Brazil won the World Cup. With the Brazilian U20 national team, however, he was able to win the U-20 South American Football Championship in 2001. He was the top scorer of the tournament with six goals together with Adriano .

Style of play

In his heyday, the Brazilian was considered to be a strong dribbler, extremely fast and eager to close. The two-footed offensive player was used flexibly as a hanging tip, as a right or left winger or in the center.
