The fifth South American Junior Soccer Championship 1971 took place from March 1, 1971 to March 25, 1971 in Paraguay .

Paraguay organized this tournament for the second time in a row after 1967, as no other national football association agreed to do so. General Marcial Alborno headed the organizing committee . It consisted of Ernesto Barchello ( Guaraní ), Cnel. Blas Servín Ramírez ( Club Cerro Porteño ), Adolfo Buzó ( Nacional ) and Antonio Achón Bau ( Libertad ).

The matches to determine the tournament winner of the event, also known as Juventud de América , were held in Asunción . The national teams of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela took part in the tournament.

The game was played in two groups of five (Group A) or four (Group B) teams and a subsequent, knockout phase with two semi-finals and one final.

Argentina faced Uruguay (1: 2) and Paraguay against Peru (3: 1) in the two semi-finals.

Because of a 1-1 draw in the final between Paraguay and Uruguay, the goal difference from the semi-finals was used to decide. Therefore, the Paraguayan team emerged victorious from the event . This was trained by Benjamín Laterza , who only succeeded his predecessor Sinforiano García in this position three weeks before the start of the tournament .

The tournament's top scorer was Ricardo Islas from Uruguay and Cristóbal Maldonado from Paraguay , each with four goals.

The squad of the winning team consisted of the following players:

Goal: Sixto Lionel Bareiro ( Sportivo Luqueño ), Juan de la Cruz "Chiquito" Benítez ( Olimpia ), Angel Cibils (Libertad)

Defense: Alicio Solalinde (Ríver Plate), Peíto Rodríguez (Cerro Porteño), Eleno Eudoro Ríos ( Sp.Luqueño ), Pedro Medina (Libertad), Sergio González (Nacional), Secundino Aiffuch (12 de Octubre de Villa Elisa), Pablo González (Guaraní)
