1988 U-20 South American Football Championship

The XIV. U-20 South American Football Championship 1988 took place from May 2nd, 1988 to May 22nd, 1988 in Argentina .

The matches to determine the tournament winner were held in Buenos Aires . The national teams of the host country, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Israel, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela took part in the tournament. The participation of the national team of the non-South American state of Israel was due to their exclusion from the Asian Cup.

The game was played in two groups, followed by a final phase, also in group mode. Brazil emerged victorious from the event . Places two to four went to the national teams from Colombia , Argentina and Paraguay . The first three teams qualified for the 1989 World Youth Championship in Saudi Arabia .

The top scorer of the tournament were the Brazilian Assís and the Paraguayan Ferreira with five goals each.
