1979 U-20 South American Football Championship

The IX. The 1979 U-20 South American Football Championship took place in Uruguay from January 12, 1979 to January 31, 1979 .

The matches to determine the tournament winner were held in the cities of Montevideo and Paysandú . The national teams of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay took part in the tournament.

The game was played in two groups, followed by a final phase, also in group mode. Uruguay emerged victorious from the event . Places two to four went to the national teams from Argentina , Paraguay and Brazil . The first three teams qualified for the 1979 World Junior Cup in Japan . At the same time, the tournament also served to qualify for the Pan American Games in 1979 . The top four were also eligible to compete in the local soccer tournament. Chile, third in group B in the preliminary round, secured fifth place on the grid with a 3-1 win in an elimination match against Peru, third in group A in the preliminary round.

The tournament's top scorer was the Uruguayan Arsenio Luzardo with four goals scored.
