Jorge Wálter Barrios Balestrasse (born January 24, 1961 in Las Piedras , Uruguay ) is a former Uruguayan football player .
Player career
Club career
The 1.79 meter tall, el Chifle called Barrios, whose playground is described as that of a mobile fighter, began his sporting career at club level in 1975 in the youth area of the Uruguayan club Montevideo Wanderers . In 1979 he made his debut in the club's first team. The following year he was runner-up with his club. 1982 followed the qualification for the competition for the Copa Libertadores 1983 , in which he finally played himself as one of the most important players of his team in the foreground. In 1985 Barrios then moved to Greece to Olympiacos Piraeus , where he was used in 45 first division games (two goals) and in his last year for this club was both Greek champions and won the Greek Super Cup with his teammates. After two years at the club, he moved on to league rivals PAE Levadiakos . In 1991 he returned to his homeland and rejoined the Montevideo Wanderers. At the end of the season, the Bohemios took third place. In 1992 his path led to competitor Peñarol , only to finally work again for Wanderers from 1993 to 2000 at the end of his career. He had actually retired from active sport in 1999, but was used again for the Wanderers in the last game of the 2000 season and was thus involved in winning the second division championship that year. One of the stands of the Estadio Alfredo Victor Viera , where the Wanderers play their home games, now bears Barrios' name.
National team
Barrios was in 1979 in the squad of Uruguay's U-20 selection , which ended the tournament as the winner at the U-20 South American Championship . In the decisive game against Argentina he successfully neutralized Diego Armando Maradona with a strong performance . During the tournament he was used six times (no goal) by trainer Raúl Bentancor . In the same year he was also third in the 1979 World Youth Championship with Uruguay .
The midfielder called El Chifle was also a member of the Uruguayan senior team , for which he completed a total of 60 international matches between July 18, 1980 and August 2, 1992 and in which he scored three times in the opposing goal. In 1980/81 he was involved in winning the Mundialito and scored the first goal in the final in Uruguay's 2-1 victory over Brazil. He also took part in the 1986 World Cup and was part of Uruguay's squad at the Copa America in 1983 and 1993 . Also in Uruguay's victory in the Copa Juan Pinto Durán in 1981, he was involved in the return leg. He was also a member of the winning team at the 1982 Nehru Cup . He was also part of the Uruguayan team at the 1985 Kirin Cup and at the Copa Artigas in 1983 and 1985.

Coaching
From 2003 to 2004 he worked as a trainer for the Montevideo Wanderers. From July 2007 to June 2008 he was the coach of the Cypriot club Olympiakos Nicosia . Since the beginning of January 2008, Barrios coached the Uruguayan club Cerrito , which he looked after again from January 2011 after an interim break. In May 2012 his there ended when his team was in acute danger of relegation as table thirteenth of the annual table. On January 6th, 2015 it was announced that Barrios would take over the coaching position at the Rampla Juniors from the Torneo Clausura 2015 and that he had signed a contract with a term of one and a half years. His coaching team is completed as "preparador físico" by co-coaches Juan Carlos Parra and Nicolás Pulis. After the 13th day of the Clausura 2015, his team was in acute danger of relegation. He then made his office available to the Rampla Juniors and was replaced by Nelson Olveira in this role two rounds before the end of the season on May 26, 2015 . On June 27, 2016, he took over the position of sports director at the Montevideo Wanderers.
Others
Barrios has a son of the same name who also works as a football player in Uruguayan football. In 2007 he made his debut with Central Español .
