Ernesto Vargas (born May 1, 1961 in Montevideo ) is a former Uruguayan football player .

Player career

society

The midfielder Vargas played for Peñarol from 1979 to 1982 and again in 1986 . In 1979, 1981, 1982 and 1986 his club won the Uruguayan national championship. In 1981 he reached the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores with the Aurinegros . There they failed in the group consisting of Nacional and the Chilean club Cobreloa , the group winner. In 1982 they reached the finals in this competition and won the trophy there against the same Club Cobreloa. At least 1988 Vargas was part of the squad of the Peñarol competitor Nacional, also based in Montevideo . With the Bolsos he won the Copa Libertadores in 1988 , where he was on the starting line-up in both final games against the Newell's Old Boys . At the subsequent World Cup final on December 11, 1988 in Tokyo against PSV Eindhoven, Vargas played again from the start. His club retained the upper hand there after a 7: 6 penalty shoot-out. In the 1988/89 season, Vargas played in Spain for Real Oviedo . He was also active at Quilmes in Argentina, the Venezuelan club Deportivo Táchira FC , in Ecuador at LDU Quito and in Peru at Universitario de Lima .

National team

Vargas took part with Uruguay's junior national team in the U-20 soccer South American Championship in 1979 and won the title with her. During the tournament he was used six times (one goal) by trainer Raúl Bentancor . He was also a member of the Uruguayan team at the Junior World Cup in 1979 and contributed two goals in six appearances to third place in the selection at this tournament. Vargas was also a member of the Uruguayan senior team . From his debut on September 26, 1979 to his last appearance on September 13, 1981, he played a total of twelve international matches with the Celeste . In doing so, he scored a hit. He was a member of the Uruguayan squad at the Mundialito , in which his home country won the title.
